Research Essay
Since my music based magazine research, I
have become much more familiar with the techniques used for this certain genre.
Consistency is the key with creating
magazines, for example: having a certain colour scheme or similar fonts for the
title and subheadings because you don’t want it to be too random - it wont look
presentable.
The lexis has to be entertaining and
persuasive for the audience in order to fit the purpose – creating a rock
magazine. In addition to that, I have come across taglines which have had a
dramatic effect, like on the ‘Vibe’ magazine it says “TEN
B.I.G. SECRETS THE FILM WONT TELL” so this immediately creates feelings of
curiosity for people in shops who take a glimpse at the magazine. The emphasis
on the word ‘big’ is used with full stops after each letter, in order to spell
it out to them – so overall, taglines are an effective selling technique. The
aim for the front cover is to give away some information and this encourages
the reader to find out what's inside, by purchasing it.
I noticed that the images play an
effective role on the front cover, the contents page and the double page spread
– everyone likes something visual to look at don’t they? The medium shots show
the facial expressions of the music artist effectively, but also show the
costumes they are wearing in order to give a clue as to what the music genre
is.

Exploring front covers
To begin my coursework I browsed the web
and researched a variety of music magazine front covers to get a feel for the
layout and colour schemes as I wasn’t very familiar with this genre. This has
benefited me for my project because I will go along the similar lines by
including a strapline, bold title,
medium shot of a band/face, logo, colour scheme etc.
